An Old and Prominent Citizen of
Niobrara Passes Away Monday Morning

John T. Lindsay Sr. 88 years of age, died at the home of his son, Monday morning at 9 o'clock.

He had, but recently come from Chicago, where he had been living with his only daughter. He became very feeble the last few years of his life.

Mr. Lindsay was a lawyer by profession and was on the same circuit with Abraham Lincoln, where he and the late Robert Ingersol were partners. In an early day, he and Ingersol built the Peoria and Midland Railroad out of Peoria.

During those years of prosperity, he invested in considerable land near Bloomfield, this county, and in 1881, he and his son came out here to farm.

Mr. Lindsay held the office of county commissioner in 1885. He was a man of considerable literary ability and had published two volumes.

The funeral was held from the Presbyterian church, Wednesday afternoon.

RUN DOWN BY A TRAIN

Monday, Mr. John T. Lindsay had a very narrow escape. That he was not instantly killed is a wonder to those, who saw it.

Mr. Lindsay is past 86 years old and is entirely deaf. Monday, he was coming uptown and attempted to cross the Northwestern railroad ahead of the milk train. The gates were down, but he did not stop for that and got nearly across the track, when the engine struck him.

The train usually goes through here at about thirty miles an hour, but the engineer saw Mr. Lindsay and applied the air brakes, so the speed of the train was greatly reduced before it reached him.

He was taken to his daughter's home. It is thought he will soon recover, although his extreme age makes such a shock a severe one.

The engine struck him a glancing blow in the hip. He was thrown to the side of the road. Fortunately, the blow being a glancing one, he escaped with a very rough shaking up and a badly bruised hip...Lake Forest, Illinois newspaper
