BETTY CAROL FINGER, 81, passed away in her sleep on June 2, 2014.

Born outside Paris, Tennessee, Betty moved with her parents and five siblings to Memphis at an early age. A proud graduate of Tech High School, she remained lifelong friends with many of her classmates. After school, while working at a local soda fountain, she was enchanted by a handsome fellow driving a red Buick convertible; thinking anybody with a car like that was rich. It turns out Gene Finger spent every penny he earned on that car, but she married him anyway, and the union lasted more than 60 years, until Gene's death in 2013.

Someday someone will write "The Gene and Betty Travel Guide," which began with road trips (with their children) to Panama City and Gatlinburg, and later included such adventures as traveling all the way to Maine without ever seeing the ocean, driving to Colonial Williamsburg and somehow missing the "Colonial" area, and their inexplicable dislike of anything in Indiana. It wasn't unusual for one of the sons to get a phone call from Mom saying, "Well, we think we're in New York, but we don't know where." Somehow, they always made it back home safely. Betty made friends wherever she went. She was a warm-hearted, loving wife and mother, who made her family the center of her life, and nobody ever went hungry after a holiday dinner at the Fingers.

She was predeceased by her husband Gene Finger, her brother Robert Wells, and her brother-in-law Joe Valdez. She is survived by two sons, Michael C. (Sherri) Finger of Memphis and John A. (Tina) Finger of Hernando; sisters Faustine Valdez of Texas, Frances (Larry) Ricks of Florida, and Virginia (Hugh) Northern of Memphis; brother Dale Wells of Memphis; brother-in-law Jimmy (Judy) Finger of Hickory Wythe; grandsons Michael A. Finger and Brian A. (Kristin) Finger of Memphis, granddaughters Brooke Fly and Ashley Fly of Oxford, and great-granddaughters Morgan, Addison, and Avery of Memphis. Betty is probably missed most of all by her black lab, Luke, rescued years ago from an animal shelter, who sits by the door and wonders why his "mama" hasn't come back home.

There will be a visitation on Tuesday, June 10, 5-7 p.m., at Family Funeral Care, 4925 Summer, with a funeral service and burial the following morning at 11 a.m. at West Tennessee State Veterans Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family would appreciate donations to the Collierville Animal Shelter or the Memphis and Shelby County Humane Society.

Arrangements under the direction of Family Funeral Care, Memphis, TN.
