THOMAS DAVIS (1761-1842)
Thomas was born May 11, 1761 in Virginia to Chesley Davis and Mary Tate before the family moved to South Carolina. He would reach 21 before his dad would die in the Revolutionary War at the hands of the Americans. We don't know if Thomas fought in that war and if so for which side. His brother, Chesley Jr., fought against the British.
Mary (Tate) Davis left her estate to the children as mentioned above. (See story on Mary Tate) Only one problem. John Davis, Chesley's first son by his first wife disagreed that he had agreed to set a slave free by the name of Patt. All the other heirs, including Thomas, agreed on August 4, 1797 to free Pat.
Thomas married twice. We think his first wife was Eleanor. His second wife was NANCY ? (about 1780-before 1842. Little is known about Nancy.) [This fact of the second marriage is disputed.]
Thomas (with Eleanor and Nancy) had the following sons; Smith L., John, Charles, Samuel, Chesley Jr., Thomas Jr. and Hedley. They also had the following daughters; Rachel, Mary (b-1797) and Elizabeth W. These children appear to all have been born in Prosperity, Newberry Co. S.C.
Thomas died March 26, 1842. We think Nancy died shortly before he did. Both had been members of the Bush River Baptist Church for years. They may both be buried in King's Creek Cemetery.
Mary Davis married John Williams Teague November 5, 1816 in Newberry Co. South Carolina. She was 19; he was only 18 years of age. She would outlive him by 38 years. They would parent an "idiot" daughter.
