Elizabeth McCarty Smith was the second daughter of Samuel Chester Smith and Mary Ann Gaunce Smith.

Her sisters:
Susan Jane Smith Martin
Martha A. Smith Pile
Angelin Smith Jackson
Mary Smith Johnson
Ellen Dorn Smith Glidewell

Her brothers:
William Don Smith
Enoch Noble Smith

Elizabeth met and married John Wesley Humphreys, September 4th, 1864 in Sullivan County, Missouri.

To their union, two daughters and three sons were born:

Mary Ellen Humphreys Long
Susan Jane Humphreys Ralls
George W. Humphreys
Samuel Chester Humphreys
Uriah Gordon Humphreys

Being widowed and on her own for eight years took it's toll on Elizabeth, even though her son Sam Chester lived on his farm near by; suffering from extreme exhaustion, one day she tripped on a throw rug and fell and broke her right hip.
They did not perform surgery in those days, and would try to unfortunately "splint the hip", after diagnosing this was the problem. A very painful procedure was then administered which was rarely successful. She was bedridden for 45 days, and was just worn out from it all.
