His migration to the Shenandoah Valley occurred in about the spring of 1742, having sold his land of 189 acres in Sussex, DE to Peter Dale on 5 May 1742.
He first bought land near Linville and in 1755 , received his patent for the land promised him on Cook's Creek.

About 20 years following Alexander Herring's settlement in Augusta Co. Va, a Thomas Herron came from Ulster and settled in the Linville Creek region of Rockingham.
