Lucille E. Casper, age 90 of Eau Claire, died peacefully at her home on Friday, May 30, 2014 surrounded by her family. She was born to Alfred and Carrie (Skovbroten) Nyre on October 25, 1923, in Mondovi, WI.
She graduated from Mondovi High School in 1941. She married the love of her life, Ray Casper, on June 28, 1947.
Shortly after high school, Lucille bravely left Mondovi on her own to work in Washington D.C. during WWII. Even during this time of hard work and sacrifice for our country, she truly enjoyed her work and helping with the war effort. She often recalled the adventures she and girlfriends had when going to New York for a weekend. The city, the sights, and the dances with service men made a strong impression on the small town girl from Wisconsin. Ironically, it was in Washington D.C. that she met Ray, who was originally from Eau Claire, only twenty miles from her hometown of Mondovi. That meeting and several years of wartime correspondence was the beginning of their many years together.
Lucille's focus was always on providing a wonderful home for her husband and children. She supported them all in their dreams for their future. She truly loved all of her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. Her friends, neighbors, and church family were also a big part of her life and shared in her understated humor and willingness to share good times and bad.
Lucille and Ray traveled the world together and instilled that love of travel in their children. Trips to Australia and Tasmania, Europe, Mexico, Belize (except for the bugs in the thatched roof), Chile, Canada, and to all corners of the US were favorite times in her life.
She will be remembered for her love of family, her strong faith, her quiet strength, her willingness to provide slippers for anyone who asked, her baking skills (lefse, donuts, and lemon meringue pie), her beautiful hardanger pieces, her love of travel, and her ability to always make people feel at home at her kitchen table. She is the example that we will all try to live up to. She will be deeply missed.
Lucille is survived by her husband, Ray; her children, Thomas (Donna) Casper, Randall (Peggy) Casper, and Julie (Jeff) Pepper; grandchildren, Christopher Casper, Carrie (Jonathan) Potter, Katherine (Daniel) Buhr, Andrew, Scott and Sarah Casper; and Megan and Jonathan Pepper; great-grandchildren, Jackson, Miles, Isla, Simon, Oliver and Fiona.
She is preceded in death by her parents; step-father, Jacob Wulff; sister, Myra Harvey and an infant brother, Donald.
A private family memorial service will be held. Interment will be in Good Shepherd Lutheran Church Cemetery, rural Mondovi, WI.
In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred to the Trinity Lutheran Church, Eau Claire, Food Pantry, http://www.trinity-ec.org/foodpantry.phtml
