Former Hardy Resident Killed in Car Accident near Monroe, Texas by R. C. HANKINS,Avalanche-Journal Staff Writer
Abernathy, July 1: J. F. WYLIE, farmer living two miles north of the Monroe community and four miles south of Abernathy, was killed this morning when his automobile was struck by a train. The 55 year old man, who had farmed in that vicinity for 13 years, was more than 100 yards from his residence and was in route to his mail box and to town for ice when the train struck his car. Train officials said the train's whistle was in full blast and emergency brakes set and the bell ringing when Mr. Wylie's 1935 car was struck.His grandson, five year old PAUL JOE, son of Mr. and Mrs. J. B. WYLIE, was reputedly playing in the yard when his grandfather was struck. Conductor GEORGE Q. MCCARTY of Amarillo and R. W. MAUPIN also of Amarillo made reports to the Santa Fe officials Wylie made his third crop in the Monroe community. He was a member of the Methodist Church. He was born near Forestburg in Montague County. Survivors are his widow, two other sons, W. B. WYLIE of Rising Star, a teacher, and FRANKLIN WYLIE of the Monroe community; five daughters MRS. E. V. BUCK of Nocona, MRS.MARTIN GRAVES of Lubbock, MRS. W. L. DAVIS of Cone community near Ralls, MRS. R.E. MYERS and MRS. W. H. EMERY of Monroe; a brother G. O.WYLIE of Forestburg; a sister MRS. T. A. WORLEY of Slaton.
Funeral services were Sunday afternoon at the Methodist Church at Monroe. Mr.Wylie had lived most of his life around Forestburg and Hardy. His son BAILEY WYLIE taught at Peabody in 1936-37.
