Viola Florence Furlow, daughter of John Richard Lanore Furlow and Eugenia M. (Cunningham) Furlow, was born 21 May 1888, in Mortons Gap, Kentucky. She was nearly a year old, when her mother Eugenia died on 7 May 1889.

Her father, John R. L. Furlow was previously married (26 February 1874) to Cordelia F Smith. Viola had two siblings from that union: Sarah Furlow (born 9 February 1875, married Sherwood H. Gamblin) and David Furlow (born 24 November 1878). Cordelia died about 1885.

Her father married Lenna Cunningham on 11 May 1895 and had daughter, Ruby May Furlow (born in 1896, married Charles Browning Gamblin). Lenna died about 1896.

Per the 1900 U.S. Census, Viola, at age twelve, lived with widower father John Furlow and four year old sister Ruby in Viola's maternal grandparents, Thomas H.B. and Amanda Elizabeth (Allen) Cunningham's household.

On 3 August 1907, in Clarksville, Tennessee, Viola married Paul Owen Smith, son of James G. and Harriett Gertrude (Allen) Smith. Viola and Paul had one daughter, Sybil L. Smith (born 2 August 1908, married Jess R. Flores).

On 24 November 1912, in Hopkins County, Viola married John William "Bill" Slaton (couple in attached photo), son of James Oliver Perry Slaton and Dona Elizabeth (Page) Slaton. They had three children: Ruby Inez Slaton (born 18 September 1913), Oscar Herbert Slaton (born 2 February 1916) and Anna Lucille Slaton (born 25 November 1918).

On 10 October 1930, in Hopkins County, Viola married Charles Arnold Slaton, son of Con Washington and Beatrice (Lacy) Slaton.

Viola Florence (Furlow) Slaton, age 75, died 19 April 1964 at her daughter Inez's home in Madisonville (244 Caroline Street). Her death was brought on in part by the shock and distress caused by the sudden death of her beloved grandson, Bobbie Dean Tirey.

The following poem was written by Viola and was found in her bible:

BIRTH PLACE
Inside the hewn log house where I was born
A glowing fire in the winter, kept it snug and warm.
The high back chairs and rocker, made of hickory wood
In one corner of the room, a spinning wheel stood.
A hand tied broom kept the wide hearth clean.
The walls were papered white with roses and leaves of green.
A wood latch closed the bedroom door.
A hand made rug lay upon the floor
Woven in colors, yellow, blue and red.
A seven star quilt lay across my bed
The colors gay, the corners square and neat.
A home spun blanket warmed by childish feet.
To me this house was never small or bare
Because I was loved and happy there.
