According to news accounts and a letter from Henry Hatfield written to John D. Hatfield and Daniel Click a week after Charley's death, Charley died at his brother Daniel Mackmahan Walker's house at Walker's Ford. Dan was "out on his raft" -- he ran the ferry -- so Charley decided to go squirrel hunting. He put his wet boot against the lock and was accidentally shot through the mouth and head.
