Alma Bortzfield peacefully passed away at home on May 22 at age 92. She was born on Sept. 2, 1921 in Bedford County, Pa. to the late John and Ethel Baker.

She is preceded in death by her husband, Russ. She is survived by her sister, Dora; son, Bill; daughter-in-law, Susan; and grandsons, Richard and Russell. Mrs. Bortzfield worked as a bookkeeper and tax consultant, also raising and selling chihuahuas. She was a long-time member of the Wilmington (Del.) Church of the Brethren and a person who was always happy to volunteer her time; whether it was baking cookies for church or reading to children through Read Aloud Delaware. During her retirement she pursued life long learning, becoming an accomplished artist and enjoying new church families at the Shepherd of the Woods Lutheran Church and Jacksonville Church of the Brethren. She was a friend to nearly everyone she came into contact with and a loving mother, grandmother and wife.

A memorial service will be held in Jacksonville on May 31 at 10 a.m. at Shepherd of the Woods Lutheran Church, 7860 Southside Blvd. A service for family and friends in the Northeast will be held at the Wilmington Church of the Brethren on June 7 at 1:30 p.m. Mrs. Bortzfield's ashes will be laid to rest with her husband's ashes at Gracelawn Memorial Park in New Castle, Del. following the June 7 service.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Mrs. Bortzfield's honor to either the Shepherd of the Woods Lutheran Church, 7860 Southside Blvd., Jacksonville, FL 32256; the Wilmington Church of the Brethren, 27 Belmont Ave., Wilmington, Del 19804; or Community Hospice of Northeast Florida, 4266 Sunbeam Rd., Jacksonville, Fla. 32216.
