Jeremiah Meinrad Gyr was born in 1851 in Einsiedeln, Schwyz, Switzerland, to Joseph Johann Gyr and Aloysia Theresia Ochsner. He married Anna Elizabeth "Lizzie" Holzknecht in Louisville, Kentucky, in 1879. They had a daughter, Lillian Elizabeth Gyr (1885–1947).
After Lizzie's passing in 1892, Jeremiah remarried Mary Barbara Trueb. Their marriage blessed them with a son, Charles Christopher Gyr (1889–1963).
Jeremiah was a resident of Louisville, Kentucky, from the 1880s until his death on February 12, 1897. He was laid to rest at St. Louis Cemetery in Louisville, Jefferson, Kentucky, USA.
