Thelma Viola Wiles
January 14, 1924 - August 12, 2009
Resident of Concord

Treasured wife of George Wiles for 63 years, loving mother of Lani Watkins (Greg) and Nikki Black (Walt); adoring grandmother of Kim Cole, Seth Watkins, Josh Watkins, Leah Lammers & Andrew Black. She was blessed with 13 great-grandchildren and two on the way. Thelma is also survived by her sister Bettye Gregory (Hardy), many nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews.

She was preceded in death by an infant son, George Alan Wiles; grandson, Michael Watkins; sister and brother-in-law, Wilma and Billy Gregory.

Thelma's greatest joy was spending time with family, especially the babies. She enjoyed gardening, sewing, dancing and traveling to visit friends and relatives near and far. She had a beautiful voice and loved to sing and harmonize. Thelma was a member of the California Home Extension, the American Legion Auxiliary and was a 4-H leader.

Thelma met the love of her life when a young Coast Guard Seaman First Class saw her ringing up groceries at the Benicia Safeway in 1944. She helped in the War effort as one of "Rosie's Riveters", while operating a fork lift at the Benicia Arsenal. Later she became a certified home health nurse, sharing her compassion for others. Thelma helped shape the lives of students when she worked as a campus supervisor for 12 years at El Dorado Intermediate.
