Augustus Curtis Hensley or "Gus" as he would affectionately be called was born 12 December 1843 in Knox County, Tennessee. Gus was the second child, according to census records, to proud parents George William Barger Hensley "Bill" of Virginia and Laurey Matilda Henson "Laura" of Tennessee whom married 13 August 1840 in Knox County, Tennessee. The family moved from Tennessee to the Benton, Dallas, Missouri area sometime between 1855 and 1860 to farm. Gus would help his father on there large farm, valued at $2000 on the 1860 Census, while his older sister Susan helped out with housework and the five younger siblings, Mark, Lucy, William, Sarah, and Mary attended school.
When the war broke out Gus signed up on 21 July 1963 and became a Privete with company "K" of the Missouri 11th Cavalry Regiment. He served until they mustered out on 9 April 1866 and then returned to life as a civilian farmer and with his 1st wife Missouri "Minnie" Julia Cox and started there family. By 1870 they had two little girls Laura E. and Georgia Ann. In February 1871 Julia died, I believe giving birth to William P and left Augustus with four children Laura E, Georgia Ann, Mary Jane, and William P.
Sometime between 1872 and 1876 Gus remarried to Anna Brooks Henson Redmon, of Ohio, whom had also been married before and brought a son Charles S Redmon into the family. By 17 June 1880 Gus and Anna had added another son to the family John Brooks and along with his son William and step-son Charles were working the farm while Laura E. helped her mother Anna with the housework and taking care of little John.
By June 1900 Gus had moved his family to a farm in Big Creek Township, Taney County, Missouri and added four more to the brood with daughter Annie E born 1883, daughter Dazy A born 1885, son Edward A born 1888, and daughter Ora E born 1891. His daughter Annie E had married preacher William L Johnson whom was living with Gus as well.
By May 1910 Gus was a widower and living with his niece Nima May and husband George and there 4 year old son Lloyd. For the rest of his retired life Gus moved from home to home living with family until his passing in 6 October 1930 in Taney County, Missouri.
