Lu married Lawrence Raymond Nelson during the World War II era and had two daughters, Nicki and Ginger. When the girls were very young, their father died in 1948 in an airplane crash in McGregor, Texas where the family lived.
About 1970 she married Allen Monroe Brown in Baytown, Texas. They were married for more than 20 years before a divorce occurred and Lu resumed use of her previous married name, Nelson, which she was using at the time of her death in 1999 in Williamson County, Texas.
