Myrtle Elizabeth Chinn Canady of Madison, MS, formerly of Batesville, AR born July 15, 1914, died at the age of 99 on Saturday, May 24, 2014.

She leaves two children, James Ray Canady (Irene) of Batesville and Mary Ann Canady of Madison, MS; five grandchildren and their spouses, Jana and William Bell (Jackson, MS), Susan and John Nicholson (Cabot, AR), Jason Canady (Batesville), Lawanda and Kent Wheeler (Vinita, OK), and Donald Ray Canady (Langley, OK); 11 great-grandchildren; and ten great-great grandchildren. Her husband of 61 years, J.C. Canady, and infant son, Jerry Lynn Canady, preceded her in death.

Myrtle was the third of four children, (Margaret Johnson, Murphy Chinn, and Mae Green), born to the late Asbury Rosal Chinn (1855- 1941) and Margaret Thompson Chinn (1876-1978) of Batesville. She also had four stepsiblings (Pearl Roberts, Mark Chinn, Gracie Clinton, and Ellis Chinn) from her father's previous marriage. She married J.C. on February 13, 1935 and they lived in Batesville until his death in 1999. She then moved to Madison, MS, to live with her daughter, Mary Ann.

Myrtle was an avid storyteller and had a great sense of humor. She worked hard her entire life, first farming as a young woman alongside her brother with a plow and mule, then at Arkansas College in the women's dorms and cafeteria, and finally at White Rogers, before retiring to enjoy her grandchildren. She attended Calvary Baptist Church and was a long time member of Cave Creek Methodist Church. She was a terrific cook who loved word search puzzles and talking on the phone with her friends and family.

The family would like to express appreciation to the wonderful caregivers at The Nichols Center, Madison, MS, and Dr. John E. Studdard of Jackson Pulmonary Associates.

A funeral service will be held at the Roller-Crouch Funeral Home in Batesville on Tuesday, May 27, at 2 p.m., with visitation immediately preceding the service from 12-2 p.m. Burial will be in Oaklawn Cemetery. Pallbearers are William Bell, John Nicholson, Dan Foley, Lynn Melton, Bobby Davis and Roy Cartwright.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations to Palmer Home for Children, PO Box 746, Columbus, MS 39703 and to Calvary Baptist Church, 1775 Lyon St. Batesville, AR 72501.
