Son of James E. McDonald, of Springville, California.

Served in 17th Company, 20th Engineers from at least 1918 until at least May 1919. Was promoted to Sergeant.

Joseph survived the torpedoing and sinking of the troopship "Tuscania" on February 5, 1918 in the North Channel between Scotland and Ireland by German submarine UB-77. When he returned from WWI he did so aboard the "Santa Paula" in May 1919 .
