Sadie's husband, John Norval Fordyce was a railroad construction engineer. He traveled throughout the states with his wife and 5 children in tow. The family came to Wasco County in late 1879. By January 1881, 4 of their 5 children had contracted Scarlett Fever, all dying Jan 11 1881. Sadie, John and John Jr, returned to Ohio. John, Sr. died in 1916. Sadie's only surviving child lived in the Northwest. After John's death in 1916, Sadie returned to Oregon to be closer to her son.
