Son of Pierson Barton Reading and Fanny W. Washington; he was born in California on a rancho named the Buena Ventura, his father's homestead, near present day Cottonwood.
At one year and four months of age, he was the first to be buried in the family cemetery, and was later joined by his father and sister. His death date on the memorial states 1862, his birth having been in August of 1861.
