Utah Fulton Boling was born November 12, 1935, in Okay, OK, to Harve and Grace Boling. He died May 18, 2014, at his home in Muskogee. He was a member of Okay United Methodist Church. Graveside services will be held at Three Rivers Cemetery on Thursday, May 22, 2014, at 10:00 A.M. with Reverend Bobby Morgan officiating. Burial will be under the direction of Lescher-Millsap Funeral Home. Following will be a gathering for friends and family at the Okay Community Center.
Utah's mother died when he was six months old, and he was cared for by grandparents, George and Ada Boling, until he was 5, when his father married Alberta Techau Wilson. The family, which included his sister, Chrystal Boling; brothers, Charles and Richard Wilson; and sister, Sharon Wilson, made their home on a farm at Gibson Station in Wagoner County.
A 1954 graduate of Okay High School, Utah was active in 4-H and varsity sports. He attended Oklahoma State University for one semester before joining the Marine Corps in 1956. He received an honorable discharge in 1959 as Staff Sergeant/Lance Corporal.
He continued his education at Bacone College and received B.S. and M.S. degrees and a graduate degree in Counseling from Northeastern State University. Finances were difficult and Utah frequently hitch-hiked from Okay to Tahlequah. He worked as a route driver for Coca Cola, making cement vent blocks, haying, combining, and other farm work, but his chosen profession was classroom teacher. He taught Social Studies at Alice Robertson Junior High School for 26 years. For most of those years he was Department Chair.
He married Betty Blevins in 1959. He and Virginia Triplett were married in 1984.
Utah was preceded in death by his mother; an infant son, Benjamin Harve; his father and stepmother; his brother, Charles; and sister, Chrystal Henson. Favorite cousin and childhood playmate, Walton "Scrub" Honeycutt also preceded him in death.
He is survived by his wife, Virginia, of the home; his son, Kendall Utah Boling, of Muskogee; his daughter, Andrea Boling Pitman and her husband, Ron, of Muskogee; his son, Jory Iwabe-Boling and wife, Noriko, of Kisarazu, Japan; daughter, Marcia Triplett and husband, Mark Vaughn, of Guthrie; daughter, Kimberly Smith, of Colorado; son, Tyron Triplett, of Edmond; brother, Richard Wilson and wife, Ann LaMar, of Tulsa; sister, Sharon Scarborough and husband, Tom, of Stillwater; sister-in-law, Shirley Wilson, of Hutchinson, Kansas; 14 grandchildren, Carly, Cassidy, Elle, Allison, Kai, Maya, Jinna, Skylar, Brenton, Lilli, Grant, Kendra, Holly, and Ty; and four great-grandchildren, Nathaniel, Josiah, Baya, and Cage Fulton.
Utah lives in the memory of a large and loving family of cousins, nieces, nephews, the Blevins family, former students, and special friends, including those from high school and college days, his teaching colleagues, fishing and hunting buddies, and his poker club. He enjoyed family, woodworking, the music of Johnny Cash, and gardening.
Utah was diagnosed with leukemia and congestive heart failure shortly after his retirement. Participation in clinical trials at M. D. Anderson brought him a long remission, which he enjoyed to the fullest. His plans for the coming week included setting out tomato plants and watching the Thunder. He lived with both terminal diagnoses with grace and courage, an inspiration to all.
In memory of Utah, the family would prefer memorials to the Oklahoma Leukemia Association.
