Born on August 31, 1916 in Mifflintown, Juniata County she is a daughter of the late Wadsworth and Lela (Sherriff) Beward. On February 19, 1938 she married F. Paul "Doggie" Smith with whom she shared more than 55 years of marriage, until he preceded her in death on May 11, 1993.
Surviving are her children: Richard C. Smith, of Mifflintown, Kathleen A. McCoy and her husband William, of Reedsville, Franklin P. Smith, Jr. and his wife Paula, of Mechanicsburg, David L. Smith and his wife Jan, Christie L. Yorks and her husband Ron, all of Mifflintown, 9 grandchildren, 23 great-grandchildren and 2 great great-grandchildren.
A daughter, Lucinda Kay Smith, on August 30, 1940, and two sisters, Dorothy Barley and Ernestine Challenger preceded her in death.
Mrs. Smith was a 1936 graduate of Mifflintown High School, a member of Messiah Lutheran Church, Mifflintown, "The Gordon Girls" and was the oldest living member of the American Legion Post 298, Ladies Auxiliary, Mifflintown.
In earlier life, she was employed as a clerk for Gordon's Dept. Store, Mifflintown and later as a cook for the American Legion Post 298, Mifflintown.
"Kate's" hobbies included knitting, gardening, cooking and baking the coconut cake for which she will long be remembered.
A funeral will be held at 11 a.m. on Thursday, May 22, 2014 from the Brown Funeral Homes, Inc. with the Rev. William N. Esborn officiating. Interment will follow in the Westminster Presbyterian Cemetery, Mifflintown.
Viewing will be from 6 – 8 p.m. on Wednesday, May 21, 2014 at the funeral home.
