Luther S. Lu Butt, 80, of Bethlehem, passed away March 24, 2005, in the V.N.A. Hospice at St. Lukes Hospital, Fountain Hill. He was the husband of the late Areve C. (Garland) Butt, who died in 2002. Born in Ringtown, Schuylkill County, he was the son of the late Earl C. and Jemima G. (Mensinger) Butt. He was a 1942 graduate of Nuremberg High School, a 1949 graduate of Bloomsburg University with a bachelor of science degree, a 1954 graduate of Lehigh University with a masters degree and received three post-graduate principal certificates from Lehigh University. Lu was employed as an Erie Insurance agent for the Garland Agency, 1975-90. Previously, he was a school teacher for more than 25 years, serving every grade level from third through 12th in five school districts of eastern Pennsylvania: Owen J. Roberts High School, Chester County, Conrad Weiser High School, Berks County, Northeast Middle School, Bethlehem, Nazareth Elementary School and George Wolf Elementary School, Bethlehem. He retired in 1975 from Northampton Area School District. He worked for brief periods for Bethlehem Steel Co., UGI Company and the Pennsylvania State Employment Office in Easton. In 1954, he coached Robesonia High School soccer team to the Berks County League Championship, going undefeated, and untied and unscored-upon, through the regular schedule and became District III P.I.A.A. Champions. He served in the Army Air Corps during World War II in the China-Burma-India Theatre, and trained with the Coast Guard on Groton, Conn., and Nantucket, Mass. He was a communication specialist in the Army Air Corps Communications System. He was a member of Holy Trinity Lutheran Church, Bethlehem, a 60-year member of the Fraternal Order of Eagles 248, Hellertown, American Legion, Disabled American Veterans Chapter 7 and White Cross Veterans of Foreign Wars, Robesonia. He was a charter member of the Robesonia JayCees and a member of the former Exchange Club of Bethlehem. He was a baseball scout for the Baltimore Orioles and a P.I.A.A. basketball official.

Survivors: Several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his wife and brothers, Paul and Ralph.

Services: 11 a.m. Wednesday, Long Funeral Home, 500 Linden St., Bethlehem. Call 7-9 p.m. Tuesday in the funeral home.
