Marysville Daily Appeal August 9, 1908:
August 8 - Joseph Girdner, one of the best known farmers in Northern California and for years a resident of this place, died at Livermore yesterday afternoon. The body reached Marysville this evening at 5:15 and was taken in charge by R. E. Bevan. The funeral services will be held at the Methodist Church South in this city Monday morning at 11 o'clock and interment will be in the Sutter City cemetery.
Mr Girdner was a native of Kentucky and was 79 years and 10 months old at the time of his death. He came with his parents to California in 1849 and after reaching a man's estate worked on the America river mines near Auburn, Placer County. He then went to Marysville and was interested in a hotel business for some time finally coming to this section and buying one of the finest ranches on the Sacramento River.
Mr Girdner married Catherine H. Brittan, a native of Missouri, who came to California during girlhood and died in this county, leaving nine children: Mary, Georgia Anne, wife of George A Pratt of Yreka, Josephine W., Henry T., Mark A., and Leroy E Girdner. Thomas B., C. B. and Joseph M., three sons of the deceased died some years ago.
