Norman “Nub” Lee Carroll, 71, of Tuscola, IL, passed away at 1:30 am on Thursday (May 15, 2014) surrounded by his wife and children at Presence Covenant Medical Center, Urbana.

Visitation will be held from 9:30 am until 11 am, and then funeral services will be held at 11 am, with the Rev. Ralph Deal officiating, Monday, May 19, 2014, at the Hilligoss Shrader Funeral Home, 66 East US Highway 36, Atwood,IL. Burial will be in the Lake Fork Cemetery, rural Atwood, IL.

Norman was born at home on June 12, 1942 in rural Atwood, the son of Marion A. (“Cob”) and Mary E. (Warner) Carroll. He married Diana Lynn Robinson on August 7, 1965 in Tuscola, IL.

Survivors include his wife, daughters, son, and four grandchildren. His sister and brother also survive.

Both of his parents preceded him in death.

Norman was a hard worker and a people person. Humble, easygoing, and talkative, he never met a stranger. He graduated Atwood High School in 1960, and helped his parents and uncles farm corn and soybeans and raise chickens, hogs, and cattle as a young man. Preferring an agricultural career, he worked at DeKalb Genetics Seed Company in Tuscola for over 33 years. He was a field supervisor and also helped process grain. He greatly enjoyed delivering seed corn because it allowed him to travel all over Illinois and Indiana and interact directly with his customers. After the local DeKalb plant closed, he worked at Schrocks in Arthur among other part-time jobs, until he needed to cut back due to his health.

Norman had fun skating and car cruising in his youth. He appreciated old tractors and old cars. As a child, he liked listening to Lone Ranger and Green Hornet serials on the radio, and later he liked listening to country music. He liked fishing and gardening, especially potatoes, tomatoes, and sweet corn. Despite the heat and humidity, he enjoyed spending family summer vacations driving to North Carolina and Florida. He loved attending family picnics and holiday get togethers. A foodie, he loved to grill out. He also had a sweet tooth and loved donuts and coffee. A movie buff, he enjoyed westerns the best, but was open to all genres.

Above all Norman deeply loved his family. Even when his health declined, he enjoyed visiting his children and grandchildren and he helped take care of his brother after their mother died. He will be greatly missed.
