James Key was the oldest of three sons of Ewing Avera and Alma Luella Key Avera. He survived the Great Depression and ant to the University of Texas, becoming a registered engineer and surveyor. He spent most of his life in San Angelo, Texas. He was a devoted father to his two children, Gwen and Jim, and a loving husband of 55 years.
