Charleston, S.C. | Thomas Alfred Nipper, age 81, of Charleston S.C. (formerly of Winfield), died May 13, 2014 at Hospice of West Alabama in Tuscaloosa. He had recently moved to Tuscaloosa from Charleston, S.C. to be near family.
Tom was born May 24, 1932 in Winfield, Alabama, to Clanton and Edith Nipper. He was a graduate of Winfield High School and a United States Navy veteran. He entered early into the marketing and management field working with Davidson's Department Store in Atlanta, Georgia, and in Columbia, South Carolina. During his tenure at Davidson's in South Carolina, Tom became friends with the Belk family, who owned a store next to his in Columbia, South Carolina. Tom was persuaded to join the Belk family of stores in 1975 where he played a major role in the development of relationships with prestigious cosmetic lines such as Estee Lauder. He served Belk as Sr. Vice President and Central Division Chairman in merchandising, marketing and management in Charlotte and Wilmington, North Carolina, and in Charleston, South Carolina where he remained until his retirement. While in Charleston, Tom was an active member of St. Michaels Episcopal Church, and served his community as a board member for Spoleto Festival USA, Trident Technical College and the Trident United Way and served as a director for Wachovia Bank.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Clanton and Edith Fields Nipper. He was also preceded in death by a daughter Debbie Smith and a brother Herman Odell Nipper.
Tom is survived by his wife of 50 years, Jo Ann Riley Nipper; son, Scot Nipper; sisters Wilma Thompson (Charles) and Sue Williams and a number of nephews and nieces.
Services will be 2 p.m. at Musgrove United Methodist Church, Friday, May 16, 2014, in Winfield, Alabama. Visitation will be from 1:30 – 2:00. Burial will be in the adjoining cemetery with Miles Funeral Home of Winfield directing.
