RANCH HAND KILLED BY S.P. TRAIN
Probably Went to Sleep While Riding Home On a Freight
Funeral of Unfortunate Victim Will Be Held Today From Chapel
Frank George, a young man 24 years of age, who had been working at the R.A. Young ranch near Acampo for the past five weeks, was ground to pieces beneath the wheels of a freight train opposite the winery at Urgon Saturday night.
Although no one witnessed the accident, it is evident it happened some time between 1:30 and 5:40 Sunday morning, for he was seen in Lodi as late as 1 o'clock when he ate lunch at Long's lunch wagon. It was evident he was riding home upon one of the freight trains, became drowsy and fell beneath the wheels.
George has been in this section for several years. He was brought here by Dr. Turner, who resides west of Woodbridge, The physician knew him in Southern Missouri. Since he has been here, he has been working at different ranches, and was reported to be a good worker. A few days ago Steele & Solkmore collected $30 for him for the sale of a cow, but he had evidently spent the money, for none was found in any of his pockets. A letter addressed to him from his mother, Mrs. Mary George of Montreal, Missouri, was found in his pockets. Hale & Bawden took charge of the remains and a telegram was sent to the mother. An answer instructing the undertakers to give her son a respectable Christian burial and to advise further, was promptly received.
An inquest was held in the undertaking chapel yesterday afternoon with a verdict that the deceased came to his death by being run over by a train. Funeral will be held this morning, Rev. Victor M. Hovis will officiate and interment will be made in Lodi Cemetery.
