US Congressman. Born in St. Paul, Minnesota, he graduated from the University of Wisconsin-River Falls, and taught in Minneapolis Public Schools. He was elected to Minnesota State House in 1970, and served there before being elected from Minnesota to the United States House of Representatives. He served from 1976 until his death in office in 2000. He co-authored the legislation in his first term that established the BWCA (Boundary Waters Canoe Area) in northern Minnesota.
