W.E. Islip, Vineyardist, Succumbs
Well Known Lodi Grower Dies On Golf Course
William Edward Islip, 55, prominent Acampo district vineyardist and a past commander of Lodi Post No. 22 of the American Legion, passed away suddenly at 5 p.m. while playing golf at the Woodbridge Golf and Country Club yesterday.
By a grim coincidence, he was a close friend and Legion association of A. L. Strange, also a past Legion commander, who died suddenly in Visalia some time Sunday night.
Mr. Islip was engaged in a friendly game of golf with Lauren Wilkinson and Philip Scaletta when he was stricken on the Number 7 green, apparently as the result of a gastric condition.
Dr. A.C. Boehmer, who arrived within five minutes after being summoned, found that he had passed away almost instantly.
Apparently in the best of health, Mr. Islip had spent the earlier part of the day inspecting vineyard properties with his close business associate, James M. Prentice.
Mr. Islip was born in Suisun, Calif., on January 27, 1892. He parents were the late Mr. and Mrs. H.A. Islip, his father having come to this country from England, his mother being a daughter of a pioneer Suisun family.
He leaves his widow, Mrs. Byrde Islip of Acampo, and the following sisters and brothers: Mrs. Ruth Graffigna, Lodi; Mrs. Pauline Hintz, Stockton; Leo Islip, Sacramento; Lloyd Islip, Winters; George Islip, Oakland and Harry Islip of Dixon. He was also the brother of the late Lewis Islip of Sacramento.
Mr. Islip came to the Lodi district in 1920 after having been engaged as an orchardist in Winters, and secured a vineyard in the Acampo district. He had been a partner of J.E. Devine, James Brown and James M. Prentice of the American Fruit Growers in the operation of a number of vineyards.
Was World War I Veteran
A veteran of World War I, Mr. Islip was an active member and a past commander of Lodi Post No. 22, American Legion. He was a member of the Legion Memorial Building committee. As a director and member of the executive committee of the Lodi Grape and Wine Festival he was likewise an active worker and was chairman of the Sunday parade committee.
During the recent Lodi Memorial Hospital building fund campaign, he had served as a colonel for one of the drive committees.
He was a member of St. Anne's Catholic Church.
