Glenn A. Woodyard was born June
14, 1909 on a farm near Auburn, to
William Henry and Ellen Scott
Woodyard. As a young child, Glenn
moved with his family near Estherville.
He attended country school for eight
years.
He farmed with his brothers prior to
entering the U.S. Army on Dec. 26, 1942
and served his three years with the
Second Armored Infantry. Glenn has been
quoted as saying, "I spent half my time
inside a tank." He started his tour of duty
in Africa and also spent time throughout
Europe. He was awarded one bronze and
one silver battle star, a good conduct
medal and the purple heart. Upon his discharge
from the Army he returned to
Wallingford to farm. After retiring from
farming, Glenn moved into Wallingford
and began working for a tiling business
for seven years.
On Oct. 22, 1983 he married
Josephine Neagle Houdeshell at Early.
They lived in Wallingford for nine years
before moving to Early in November of
1992. Josephine passed away on Dec. 23,
1993.
Glenn was a member of the
Wallingford American Legion Post No.
567. His hobbies were hunting, fishing
and trapping. He had a number of interesting
stories to share with his grandchildren.
Preceding him in death were his parents,
his wife, Josephine; and four brothers,
Lloyd, Mannie, Will and Harry.
