Douglas A. Crone, retired Air Force colonel

Douglas A. Crone, a retired Air Force colonel and veteran of two wars who became a General Services Administration division director, died Dec. 27 at Greenspring retirement community in Springfield, Va. He was 94.
The cause was cancer, said his son, Douglas A. Crone Jr.
Col. Crone served in the Army during World War II and participated in the Normandy invasion and the Battle of the Bulge, his family said. He joined the newly established Air Force in 1947 and was a veteran of the Korean War. His final active-duty assignment was at the Pentagon.
After retiring from the Air Force in 1967, Col. Crone joined the GSA and became director of the automated data-processing procurement division before retiring in 1981.
Douglas Arthur Crone was a native of York, Pa., and a 1942 graduate of Ursinus College in Collegeville, Pa.
During his military career, he graduated from the Air Command and Staff College.
His military decorations include the Bronze Star Medal and three awards of the Air Force Commendation Medal. At the GSA, he received awards for meritorious and exceptional service.
He was a member of Little River United Church of Christ in Annandale, Va., and was active in the Neighborhood Watch program of the West Springfield Civic Association for many years.
He moved to Greenspring retirement community from Springfield around 2000, and he set up and operate a toy train exhibit during the Christmas season.
His wife of 69 years, Bette Replogle Crone, died in 2012. Survivors include three children, Douglas A. Crone Jr. of Gainesville, Va., Susan D. Wood of Springfield, Va., and Deborah E. Crone of Charlotte, N.C.; four grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
