Dies Monday Evening Aged 76 – Funeral Service Is Held Thursday
Three quarters of a century of living in one community ended on Monday night when death came to William Mereness, nearly 76. Funeral services were held in the Brick church on Thursday afternoon, Nov. 12, the Rev. Harold O. Gronseth officiating. Two songs were sung by a quartet consisting of Mrs. LaVern Bottlemy, Mrs. Harold O. Gronseth, J. V. Nichols and Frank Ryer. Burial was in the Brick Church cemetery. Pall bearers were Floyd and Ira Christenson, Roy and Whitney Wickham, Vernon Lamkin and Raymond Ward. Flower girls were Misses Laura Lamkin, Helen Bottlemy, Margaret Christenson and Catharine Harness. The funeral was largely attended by relatives and friends. Many of the residents of the community are relatives of the deceased for there are three generations of the Mereness family living there now. William Mereness was born on Dec. 20, 1860, on the old homestead in the Brick Church community, one of a family of 10 children. His father and mother, Ira and Mary Hanes Mereness, were among the early settlers of the county, migrating here from Sharon, NY in June 1859. Mr. Mereness attended the Brick Church and later the Big Foot academy. On June 6, 1891, he was married to Della Gage at Claremont, Virginia. To this happy marriage five children were born, Elsie, Jessie, Stanton, Lawrence, and Helen. Mr. Mereness was a man of unusual character and industry. He served his family by being a successful farmer, especially energetic and efficient. He served his community by serving as school director for a number of years and also as trustee for 30 years. His allegiance and loyalty to the church of Christ was a constant challenge and inspiration to those who witnessed that devotion throughout the years in good times and bad. He went out on the great adventure and to be at home with the Lord, whom he loved, on Monday evening, Nov. 9, 1936, after and illness of several months. He leaves to remember his heroic and sacrificial life, his wife, Della, five children, Mrs. Elsie Brereton, Mrs. Walter Nichols, Stanton Mereness, Lawrence Mereness, Mrs. Robert Fairchild; 13 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren, and a community of relatives and friends who are deeply indebted to him. Three sisters live in the same community, Mrs. Waldo Lamkin, Mrs. Peter Christenson and Mrs. R. S. Wickham. Published in the Walworth Times – Thurs., Nov. 12, 1936.
