age 90 of Abingdon, died at 3:45 pm Friday, May 9, 2014 at the Care Center of Abingdon.
He was born December 9, 1923 in Barnesboro, Pennsylvania, the son of
Harry and Vesta (McConnell) Waugh. He married Madeline Rood on June 14, 1945 in Galesburg. She preceded him in death on April 17, 2000. He was also preceded in death by his parents, one son, George Waugh, Jr., one daughter, Pat Wolford and her husband Larry, one daughter-in-law, Patricia Waugh, one granddaughter, two great-grandsons, and brothers and sisters.
George is survived by one son, Mick (and Terri) Waugh of Kewanee; nine grandchildren; several great-grandchildren; and a daughter-in-law, Teri Waugh of St. Augustine
He grew up in Pennsylvania. He served in the Army Air Force during WW II. After moving to Abingdon, he worked at the former American Sanitary Manufacturing Company, where he helped organize the first labor union for the factory and served as president. He later worked for the City of Abingdon at the Abingdon Cemetery and then worked for the Knox County Housing Authority as the custodian at the Bluebell Tower, where he currently resided.
He was of the Catholic Faith. He was a member of the Harry E. Wiles American Legion Post #381 in Abingdon. George took pride in making donations to help hospitalized veterans and was recognized as Donor of the Year in 2007.
Funeral service will be held at 11:00 am Monday, May 19, 2014 at the Hinchliff-Pearson-West Abingdon Chapel. Deacon Michael Crummer will officiate. Burial with Military Rites will follow in the Abingdon Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 10:00 am to 11:00 am Monday at the chapel.
