Mrs. Gayle Blackwell Payne - JONESBOROUGH


Mrs. Gayle Blackwell Payne, 67, 156 Hillcrest Circle, Sulphur Springs community, Jonesborough, died Friday, Jan. 25, 2002, at Johnson City Medical Center.

Mrs. Payne was a Jonesborough native and a daughter of the late George W. and Nelia Pearl Beard Blackwell.

She was the owner and operator of Gayle's Restaurant, Jonesborough.

Mrs. Payne was a member of Sulphur Springs Baptist Church.

She and her husband, Clyde Lee Payne, founded the Sulphur Springs Fire Department.

Mrs. Payne was preceded in death by one infant son, Sherman David Payne; and one sister, Georgiann Cox.

Survivors, in addition to her husband, include one son, Jeffrey Lee Payne, Jonesborough; two daughters, Susan Gayle Burleson, Perry, Ga., and Julie Anne Lane, Jonesborough; one sister, Barbara June Blackwell, Johnson City; one half brother, Max Blackwell, Rogersville; two half sisters, Ira Jean Levine, St. Petersburg, Fla., and Faye Shakley, Oregon; five grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.


Gayle was born Jan. 21st, 1935 in Afton Tn. A few years later moved to Hampton Tn. were she attended school. Her parents operated a country store. She attended High School in Jonesborough Tn. She was the daughter of George & Nelia Blackwell. She also had 3 sisters and 2 stepbrothers. Gayle met Lee Payne at the Service Station of her parents in Jonesborough, just off the Jonesborough Hwy. They married in 1953 and had 4 children Sherman David, Jeffrey Lee, Susan Gayle & Julie Anne Payne. Lee & Gayle owned and opperated Lee Payne Shell Service Station and also owned & opperated Gayle's Restaurant for 28 years also the Elm's Restaurant in Erwin, Tn. I think that I should have added her as famous, she had over 700 people attend her funeral. She also had 3 grandsons Michael & Ryan Burleson and Robbie Lane and 1 grandaughter, Heather Lane. She will be missed by all who knew her.
