Joseph John David Cowan was ordained a deacon in 1894, before being ordained a ruling elder in 1913. Within nine months Joe Cowan lost his wife, Emma Satterfield, a newborn daughter and a 1½ year old daughter named Laura Beulah, … the wife and infant four days before Christmas in 1907. As observed by a relative, Anna Caldwell, “Many people would have lost their faith after something like this or at least had doubts. It is a testament to his faith that he obviously did not, since he had the longest period of active membership in 1952.” Joe's years of active service on the Session were only one year less than his years as a member of Bethel Church. Altogether, as deacon and ruling elder, Joe served sixty-two years, attending over 140 meetings. The last meeting he attended was on July 1, 1956, at the age of eighty-five.
