Vernon “Vern” A. Fannin, 80, of Palmer, formerly of Anchorage and Kodiak, died Nov. 24, 2007 in Crandon, Wisc.

Fannin was born in Crandon on Dec. 28, 1926 to Thomas and Della (Atkins) Fannin. He grew up in Crandon, and moved from there when he was 16 and was a merchant marine on the Liberty Ships.

Fannin returned to Crandon when he was 18, and left again when he was drafted into the U.S. Army to serve in World War II.

In the 1940s, he met his wife, Katherine K. Fannin, in Kodiak.

Fannin was a life-long member of the VFW and Elks Lodge in Kodiak. He was also a life-long Teamster who worked for the state of Alaska in Kodiak and began working on the North Slope in 1969.

Fannin enjoyed music and was a huge history buff. His family described him as a comical prankster who always wore a smile. He will be remembered for his tinkering and for always being a jokester. He loved his family very much, and will be sadly missed by his family and friends.

He is survived by his wife, Katherine K. Fannin of Great Falls, Mont.; daughters Dolores Williams of Cascade, Mont., Cynthia Wansor of Sutton, and Della and Bonnie Fannin of Anchorage; son and daughter-in-law Jerry and Karen LaFollete of Kodiak; son Drew T. Fannin of Palmer; grandchildren Melissa Dringenberg, Eric Wansor, Jerry M. LaFollette, Donovan Fannin, and Shea Peach; great-grandchildren Kaylee Stokes, Madison Dringenberg, and Josh and Jerrod LaFollette; and many nieces and nephews in the Crandon area.

Fannin was preceded in death by his parents Thomas and Della (Atkins) Fannin; son Dennis Fannin; and granddaughter Monica LaFollette

Visitation and a funeral were held in December at Weber-Hill Funeral Home in Crandon. Inurnment will be at a later date at the Crandon Lakeside Cemetery. The Forest County Veterans Honor Guard will provide military honors.

Condolences may be sent to Bonnie Fannin, 5018 E. 43rd Ave., Apt. 19, Anchorage 99508.
