"Phyllis Wilhelmina Cloyd passed away peacefully April 10, 2014, with family by her side.

She was born Phyllis Wilhelmina Martinsen November 13, 1923 in Portland, Oregon to Einar Alfred Martinsen and Frederika Johanna Elbert. She fondly remembered her early years with her maternal grandparents, Jannes and Berendina Elbert, on the "Five-Acre Farm" near Molalla, Oregon. Phyllis went to high school in Salem, Oregon, living with her aunt, Berendina Verhagen, and working at the Wooden Shoe Restaurant.

Phyllis married James K. Cloyd in Columbia, South Carolina January 16, 1945, and returned later that year to Salem, where she lived the rest of her life. Phyllis and Jim raised their family on a small farm in the Salem Hills, a place they cherished for fifty-three years.

Phyllis and Jim enjoyed cooking and gardening, and she always had a bountiful supply of dahlias and other cut flowers in the house. They took many family camping trips to the Oregon Coast and lakes in the Cascades and Central Oregon. Over the years, she worked in retail, and volunteered for ten years at Mission Mill, and later at South Salem Seniors.

Her husband James Cloyd preceded Phyllis in death in 2008. She is survived by her daughter Wendy Thorp (husband Mark), and sons Courtney (wife Ann Staley), Nicholas (wife Patty), and Kimble (wife Cheryl), grandchildren Haley, Lauren, Scott, James, Alyssa, Tylee, and Jadyn, and great-grandchildren Kirra and Charlotte.

Funeral arrangements are being made by City View Funeral Home. A memorial service will be held Monday, April 14, 2014 at 10:00 am at City View Funeral Home, followed by burial at City View Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, contributions in Phyllis's name may be given to Willamette Humane Society in Salem, OR."
