Mr. Kohl was well and favorably known to all the old citizens of this portion of Republic county where he had lived so many years, and the news of his death was deeply regretted by all. Mr. Kohl was born in Berks county, Pa., on Feb. 24, 1818. Was married to the woman who is yet alive to mourn his loss, on Jan. 12, 1836—a little over 50 years ago. He was a member of the church (Methodist, we believe) for over 50 years, and was a preacher of the Gospel, in which he believed, for over 21 years. He and his aged wife are the parents of eleven children, nine of whom are left to mourn his death—six sons and three daughters. Deceased was an exemplary citizen, industrious, frugal and honest. No man ever lived, more worthy of the noblest of all epitaphs—“Here lies and [an] honest man.”
—Republic City News (Republic City, KS), February 5, 1886, p 5.
