Joseph H. Stevens Passes Away After a Lingering
Illness.

FUNERAL HELD MONDAY
Many Years a Prominent Groceryman in this City
Was Seventy-six Years Old.

Mr. Joseph H. Stevens, one of oldest citizens of Columbus, passed away Sunday morning at 9:20
o'clock, after a long illness, his death having resulted from a complication of diseases.

Mr. Stevens was 76 years old, and was one of the most highly esteemed citizens of Columbus. He was a conscientious member of the Christian church, for
which he was an active worker. He was quiet and unostentatious in his manner, but responded liberally to all calls of charity.

Born in 1839, Mr. Stephens was spoken of as "the eldest native born son of Columbus." On the maternal side, he was related to the fighting McColloughs of North Carolina and Tennessee. When about fifteen years of age, he was employed in the grocery business. At seventeen, he was
employed in the probate clerk's office and then managed to get about eight months of schooling and then served three years as clerk and book-keeper in a dry goods store. He enlisted in 1861 and served for the full four years in the Fourteenth and Thirty fifth regiments of this state.

After the war he entered the dry goods and grocery business and here began his successful business career. He was a public officer, either as deputy or principal for about thirty years and was one of the City Fathers for eleven years.

Mr. Stevens, at the time of his death, was in the grocery
business here with his son, Mr. L W. Stevens.

Besides his son, Mr. Stevens is survived by a daughter, Miss Alice Stevens, of this city, and a brother, Mr. James Stevens, of Burnett, Texas, all of whom have the sympathy of numerous friends in their bereavement.

Funeral services were held Monday afternoon at the Christian church and were conducted by the minister, Rev. J. N Harker. Members of Columbus Lodge, No. 5, A. F. and A. M., DeMolay Commandery, No. 8, Knights Templar, Union Lodge, No. 35, I. O. 0. F., Isham Harri
son Camp, Mo. 27, U. C. V., and many friends attended the last sad rites.

The honorary pall bearers were: Col. C. L. Lincoln, Col.
W. C. Richards, Capt. J. A. Nielson. Prof. T. F. McBeath,
Messrs. J. M. Easton, R. T. Williams and J. A. Watson. The active pall bearers were all members of DeMolay Commandery No. 8. Knights Templar, those who served being Messrs. J. T. Harrison, R. A. Carson. W. A. Stepp, H. E. Hoffmeister, W. N. Puckett and C. C. Buder.

Interment took place at Friendship cemetery, the ceremonies at the grave having been conducted
by the Masons.

The floral offerings were numerous and beautiful. The
flower committee at the church was Mesdames W. E. Kennedy,L. H. Hatchett and J. M. Easton. The committee at the cemetery was Mrs. W. N. Puckett, Misses Ruth Jacob, Dolly Locke and Laura Kennebrew.
