Age 87, a resident of Los Lunas since 2008, died Friday, April 25, 2014. He is survived by his wife of 67 years, Charlotte (Sunnie) of Los Lunas; Cynthia Griffin (Mike), Michael Clark (GayLynn), Deborah Hasse (William), and Timothy (Sharon), a brother Warren Clark (Sandy) of Fountain Hills, AZ and a sister Sue McKereghan (Chuck) of Ashland, OR; 9 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
Mike was born in Minneapolis, MN, July 6, 1926. As a young man he enjoyed many sports, including boxing, swimming, and basketball.
He joined the Marine Corps in 1944 and was trained at Camp Pendleton, CA. From there he was assigned to the 5th Marine Division "The Spearhead", and participated in the battle of Iwo Jima where he was awarded the Purple Heart.
Mike was recently selected to join the Honor Flight of Northern New Mexico's inaugural flight to Washington D. C. to see the WWII memorial in June. Following his honorable discharge from the Marine Corp, Mike attended college on the GI Bill at the University of Minnesota.
He moved to Pasco, WA, where he worked as a tire retailer before moving to Roswell, NM.
While there he worked as a liquor distributer and was transferred to Las Cruces, NM. In Las Cruces, he continued his education at NMSU. Subsequent to his attendance at NMSU, Mike continued his public service as an accountant with the Department of the Army at White Sands Missile Range.
Mike was always up for a new adventure, and lived in Frankfurt, Germany for seven years while he worked for the Army Corps of Engineers as an accountant. He and Sunnie traveled extensively throughout Europe, as well as Egypt and Russia.
He retired from the Department of Defense and returned to Las Cruces before moving to Los Lunas. Upon retiring they continued to enjoy their love of travel throughout the United States. Mike and Sunnie traveled to Florida, Hawaii, Alaska and all parts in between.
He will be buried at the National Cemetery in Santa Fe on Friday, May 9, 2014
