Prior to the war he was a defensive end for the Winnipeg Blue Bombers and considered an outstanding player. In 1946 the the First Canadian Paratroops Battalion created and donated a trophy to honor the Canadian Football League (CFL) Most Ourstanding Player. Since 1973 this award is given to the Most Outstanding Player of the Western Division.
