Mother Bertha Mae Chew was born July 17, 1932 to the union of James Turner Spearman and Edna Mae Spearman.
Bertha accepted Christ at an early age. She believed in the Lord and it showed in everything she did. She was a founding member of Church of God in Ford Heights, Illinois, under the Pasturage of the late James Radden, where she watched the church grow. She was a faithful member and mother of the church.
Bertha united in marriage with the love of her life, David Chew on March 13, 1948. To this union nine children were born, three daughters and six sons. She exemplified Proverbs 31:29 and was a capable wife and mother.
Bertha loved life and loved her family. She was truly a blessing to everyone who knew her. Her warm smile and years of wisdom dried many tears and healed countless broken hearts. Bertha played the role of mother and grandmother to many and will truly and genuinely be missed.
Bertha is preceded in death by her husband, David Chew; three sons, James Chew, Oscar Willie Chew and Michael Chew; and one brother James Turner Spearman II.
Bertha leaves to cherish her memory and continue her legacy, three daughters, Annie Washington, Vivian Chew and Brenda (James) Salter; three sons, Charlie (Bonnie) Chew, David (Versey) Chew and Melvin Chew; forty-two grandchildren; and a host of great grandchildren; one sister-in-law, Rebecca Washington; one daughter-in-law, Rosa Lee Chew; and a host of loved ones and many, many friends.
