Three Spokane-area young people died in a one-vehicle crash on Interstate 90 about 11 miles east of Ritzville, the WSP said. That crash occurred around 4:50 a.m.

Gabriel L. Johnson, 20, of Spokane Valley was driving a 2003 Buick Century east on I-90 when his car left the road, went over a guard rail and hit a bridge support. He was pronounced dead at the scene, the WSP said.

His passengers, who were both from Spokane, also were killed. They are Mary C. Werts, 21, and Trevor L. Hallman-Person, 19.

Johnson and Hallman-Person were wearing seatbelts; Werts was not, the WSP said.

Mary Catherine Werts, 21 of Spokane, WA and was tragically taken on Thursday May 1st, 2014 in a fatal car accident.
She was born to Kristi Heaton and Doug Werts on February 21st 1993. Mary attended St. Aloysius School and graduated from Gonzaga Prep in 2011.
Mary will always be remembered for having a huge heart and for fiercely loving her family and friends. During her high school career she played club volleyball and sang in the choir. Mary was vivacious and full of life.
Mary was preceded in death by her father Doug Werts and her grandfather Mike Rojan. Mary is survived by her mother Kristi Heaton, step-father Don Heaton, three siblings, Tyler Werts, Emma and Aaron Heaton and grandmothers Catherine Rojan and Jo Compton and Grandfather Keith Werts.
Funeral services will be held at 4:00 p.m. Tuesday, May 6th, 2014 at St. Aloysius Church, 303 E. Boone Ave. Spokane, WA 99202. A reception will immediately follow at St. Aloysius School, 611 E. Mission. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made at any Numerica Credit Union to the Mary Werts Memorial #776801 or at St. Aloysius School.
