Augusta Theresa (Kempen) Spacek, longtime resident of Jourdanton was called home by the Lord on Wednesday, April 30, 2014, at the age of 92 years.

"Gussie" was born on March 5, 1922, to George and Theresa Kempen in Selma, Texas. She married Ernest W. Spacek at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Las Gallinas, Texas. They lived in Jourdanton, Texas, where they raised three children. Gussie kept books for the family business, Spacek Machine Shop, and helped run the family farm. Even though these duties kept her busy, Gussie became active in church, school and community activities.

Her commitment to her Christian faith was amazing. Her memory and example will be cherished by many. Gussie was a longtime member of St. Matthew Catholic Church where she taught religious classes, was active in the Altar Society, church picnics, hospitality ministry, nursing home volunteer and was a representative for the Christian Assistance Ministry (CAM). Gussie and Ernest were awarded the Guardian Angel Award for their faithful church work.

A cheerful, service-oriented fraternalist, Gussie not only was a member, but served in a variety of offices in numerous organizations, including KJT, KJZT, SPJST, RVOS and The American Legion Auxiliary.

Gussie was a fun mom and enjoyed telling stories about her years working closely with her children and their friends. She loved being a 4-H leader and working with the County Extension Agent. She was a member of the P.T.A. and Band Boosters.

In later years she became active in the local Senior Citizens' organization. She demonstrated leadership by holding offices. Her devotion was shown by her participation and attendance at all functions.

The Jourdanton Chamber of Commerce honored Gussie in 1988 as the "Senior Citizen of the Year." She continued volunteering and helping others for many more years.

Gussie enjoyed fishing and camping trips to the coast, holiday gatherings, dominoes, cards and Bingo. Also, traveling in their motor home and cooking. But, most of all, she loved her family and serving the Lord.

Gussie lived a full life with a smile, an infectious laugh and sometimes with a mischievous twinkle in her eye. Affectionately called "Memo" by her grandchildren, she will be greatly missed by family and friends.

Mrs. Spacek is survived by daughter, Patricia "Pat" Harper and husband John of Jourdanton; Son Ernest "Ernie" Spacek and wife Gloria of Katy; daughter-in-law, Linda Spacek of Pleasanton; six grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren, numerous nieces and nephews and many friends.

In addition to her parents, she is preceded in death by her husband of 68 years, Ernest W. Spacek; son, Robert "Bobby" Spacek; four brothers; three sisters.

Visitation will be held from 6-8PM with the Rosary at 7PM, Monday, May 5 at St. Matthew Catholic Church. A funeral Mass will be celebrated on Tuesday, May 6, at 11AM at St. Matthew Catholic Church followed by interment at St. Matthew Cemetery.
