Rose May Mowrey McCray is my father's mother. She was born to John Wesley Mowrey and Eliza Ellen Hoffstatter on March 22, 1885 in Eden, Benton County, Iowa. She was the last child. Eliza Ellen died on March 10, 1891 in Moscow Idaho. Rose was then adopted by Eliza's sister who was a Hoffstatter living in Baker City Oregon. Eliza's sister had married her first cousin Frank Hoffstatter, so Rose Ellen assumed the Hoffstatter last name. Then she married James Willis McCray and became a McCray.
Eliza died in 1891 in Moscow Idaho when Rose was about 5 years old. Eliza's gravestone is on Find A Grave. Her father allowed Eliza's sister, Editha Adeline Hoffstatter (1857-1965, yes she lived to be 107) to adopt Rose. Editha Adeline had married her first cousin Frank Hoffstatter (1866-1903) in 1886. The adoption papers in my family's archives list just Editha Adeline as the adopter...but I would image that Frank also became a legal parent too. (Submitted by member #49365954)
