Mrs. IRENE BAKER SMITH, widow of Simon Smith, of 61 W. Water St., Smithsburg, died at the Washington County Hospital Thursday at 10:30 a.m. of complications after an illness of four days. She was 88 years of age. Born and reared near Avondale, Carroll County, she was the daughter of the late Daniel and Mary Elizabeth Maule Baker.
Mrs. Smith had lived in Smithsburg for the past 30 years. She was a member of the Seventh Day Adventist Church.
Surviving are daughter, Mrs. Carrie M. Green, Smithsburg; son, Albert Bowers, Sharpsburg; 7 grandchildren, 18 great-grandchildren and 1 great-great-grandchild; sisters, Mrs. Cletus and Mrs. Ada Baker, Hanover; Mrs. Elizabeth Fritz, near Baltimore; Mrs. Charles Wentz, Hanover; brothers, Herbert Baker, Hanover; Calvin Baker, Washington; and a number of nieces and nephews.
Services were held at the A.K. Coffman Funeral Home. Interment in Rose Hill Cemetery.
