George was adopted by David S and Alice E Armstrong. On the 1900 Census, he was listed in Scott Township, Indiana living with his parents. On the 1910 Census, he was listed as living with his parents. Upon graduatation from Raconon High School in Putnam County, Indiana, he moved to South Dakota and was a school teacher in a one room school.

He returned to Indiana before WWI to work on the family farm, and then joined the US Marines during WWI and reached the rank of Sargeant. On the 1930 Census, he was listed as a farmer in Scott Township, Indiana with his wife Lillian, son Lloyd, and mother Alice.

On the 1940 Census, he was listed as a watchman in Wayne Township, Indiana, with his wife Lillian. He was a guard at the State prison and at the Reformatory. He was chief of plant protection at the Bryant Heater Company.

During WWII, he served as a civilian employee of the Army engineers, doing clerical work in Alaska and the Aleutian Islands.
