WABASHA--The funeral for Vernon I. Alfson will be at 1:30 p.m. Friday at Our Redeemer Lutheran Church in Wabasha with the Rev. Ronald Zindler officiating. Burial will be in St. John’s Cemetery in Lake City.
Mr. Alfson, 94, of Wabasha, a retired farmer, died Tuesday (May 5, 1998) at St. Elizabeth Health Care Center in Wabasha.
He was born Sept. 7, 1903, in Canton Township, Fillmore County, and grew up on the family farm near Harmony. In the early 1940’s, he moved to a farm south of Kellogg and later farmed in Cook’s Valley near Kellogg. On June 2, 1948, he married Edith Favill in Wabasha. After his retirement in 1973, they lived in Lake City, Red Wing, and Wabasha before entering the care center in 1985. Mr. Alfson was a member of Our Redeemer Lutheran Church and enjoyed fishing and woodworking.
Survivors include his wife; two daughters, Laverna Kaiser of Kellogg and Felora (Mrs. Mike) Mersy of Saginaw, Mich; three stepdaughters, Mildred Slawson and Alva Nelson, both of Hesperia, Calif., and Jeanette (Mrs. Francis) Peters of Kellogg; 13 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; 12 great-great-grandchildren; and a sister, Mildred Pooler of Rochester. Two brothers and two sisters preceded him in death.
Friends may call from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. Thursday at Abbott Funeral Home in Wabasha and an hour before the service Friday at the church.
