Margaret Jane "Janie" Barnette was the eldest of six chidlren born to Sidney Alexander Barnette and his wife Margaret Isabelle Ewart. She married Thomas Monroe Van Pelt.

They had three children, John Calvin Van Pelt (1906-1978), Mattie Belle Van Pelt (1907-1996, Mrs. Alexander) and Harry Lee Van Pelt (1911-1967). Janie died less than two months after her last child was born.
