Watson enlisted as an apprentice seaman in the U.S. Navy at Columbia, S.C., on 8 Nov. 1917 and died of pneumonia just over a month later. His parents were James Matthew Bigger and Ferrie Mason Bigger. He had five brothers and three sisters of whom six siblings and his parents survived him.
