DEATH OF MRS. IJAMS -- Another Old Resident Responds to the Final Summons After a Brief Illness.
Last night at 11:50 occurred the death of Mrs. Eliza Ijams, one of the oldest of Bloomington’s residents, and one who has seen the little village in the vast prairie become one of the chief cities of the state. The announcement of Mrs. Ijams death will come as a great shock to her many friends in this city and the surrounding country, as she had been ill less than two weeks, having been take with symptoms of the grip one week ago Monday. The trouble developed into pneumonia which was the immediate cause of her death.
Mrs. Ijams was born in Buck’s county, Pennsylvania near Philadelphia, March 23, 1808. Her maiden name was Rodman, she being the eldest sister of the late Scammon Rodman. She was married in Ohio in February, 1862, to Mr. Lewis Ijams. They came to Illinois in 1851 and settled in Bloomington, and with the exception of one year spent on a farm in the country, her residence ever since then has been in this township. Mr. Ijams died in 1867.
The deceased was the mother of eleven children, six of whom are living. The are, Mrs. Mary Griffith, of Boulder, Col.; Mr. J. R. Ijams, of Urbana; Mrs. Lottie Colwell, of Ridge Farm; Miss Eliza Ijams and Messrs. George and L.E. Ijams of the city. Mrs. Ijams made her home with the latter, at 411 East Front street.
The deceased comes from a long line of Quaker ancestors, her grandfather being a member of the Society of Friends. He was also a soldier in the revolutionary war. She joined the Methodist church when 18 years old, and since living in this city has been a member of the First M. E.
